High-speed handpiece turbines operate at speeds exceeding 400,000 RPM. This type of force requires a precise fit of the component parts.
During the rebuild process, a technician forcibly removes the bearings and impeller from the spindle with a bearing press. This action causes deformation of the spindle.
When new bearings and the old impeller are pressed back onto the reused spindle, the fit is no longer precise. This can seriously compromise the balance and alignment of the turbine, leading to vibrations, slippage, excess heat and premature failure.
This is why rebuilt high speed turbines have a failure rate of up to 3 times that of new turbines, and why turbine "rebuilds" end up costing more in the long run.
